Georgia Window Tint Laws Guide

Authoritative reference for Georgia tint law (O.C.G.A. § 40-8-73.1). Last Updated: May 13, 2026. Written by Tint Atlanta — Madico authorized dealer, 35+ years installing legal tint in Woodstock and metro Atlanta.

Quick Answer

Georgia requires 32% VLT minimum on every window of a sedan. SUVs, trucks, and vans must keep 32% VLT on the front side windows but can use any darkness — even 5% limo — on the back side and rear windows. Reflectivity is capped at 20%. A 6-inch non-reflective windshield strip is allowed on either vehicle class.

What does Georgia tint law actually say?

Georgia's window tint statute is O.C.G.A. § 40-8-73.1. The law regulates two things: how dark a tint can be (measured as Visible Light Transmission, or VLT) and how reflective it can be. Higher VLT means more light passes through — so a higher VLT number is a lighter tint.

The legal minimum VLT depends on the class of vehicle and the position of the window. Tint Atlanta verifies vehicle class on every quote because the sedan vs SUV distinction is the single most common point of confusion in Georgia tint law.

Georgia VLT requirements by vehicle and window

Window Sedan / Coupe SUV / Truck / Van
Windshield Top 6 inches, non-reflective only Top 6 inches, non-reflective only
Front side windows 32% VLT minimum 32% VLT minimum
Back side windows 32% VLT minimum Any darkness (5% limo allowed)
Rear window 32% VLT minimum Any darkness (5% limo allowed)
Reflectivity cap (all windows) Under 20% — no chrome or mirrored films

Sedans and coupes — uniform rule

Every window on a sedan must let at least 32% of visible light through. That includes the rear-side and back windows. A common mistake is assuming the rear can go darker because it's behind the driver — on a sedan, it cannot.

SUVs, trucks, and vans — split rule

On an SUV, truck, or van, only the front side windows are bound by 32% VLT. The back-side and rear windows can be any darkness, including the 5% limo shade. This is why customers see SUVs in metro Atlanta with very dark rears that look identical to a tinted sedan but are entirely legal on that vehicle class.

What about the windshield strip?

Georgia allows a non-reflective tint strip on the top of the windshield, no more than 6 inches deep, on every vehicle class. The strip cannot extend below the AS-1 line if the manufacturer marked one. The 6-inch strip is sometimes called a "sun visor" or "eyebrow" strip in the industry.

Full-windshield ceramic tint is technically a separate question. Tint Atlanta offers ceramic windshield tint at the 70% VLT level, which Georgia does not prohibit because the film stays above the practical visibility floor, but jurisdictions vary on enforcement. Confirm with Tint Atlanta before installing.

What about reflectivity? Can I get the chrome look?

Georgia caps reflectivity at 20% on every window of every vehicle. Chrome films, mirrored finishes, and high-reflective metallic films exceed this limit and are illegal in Georgia. Tint Atlanta does not install any film that exceeds the cap — every Madico product on the Tint Atlanta lineup is well under 20% reflectivity.

Medical exemption — who qualifies and how?

The Georgia Department of Public Safety issues a medical exemption that allows darker tint than the standard VLT minimums. The exemption is granted per-vehicle, not per-person, and the affidavit must be kept in the vehicle so an officer can verify it during a stop.

How to apply

The Georgia Medical Exemption Affidavit requires a written statement from a licensed Georgia physician documenting the medical need and the recommended VLT. The vehicle owner submits the affidavit to the Department of Public Safety along with vehicle identification information. Tint Atlanta keeps a copy on file for any customer with an approved exemption and adjusts the installed VLT to match the physician's recommendation.

"The medical exemption is the only legal path to a sub-32% front side window in Georgia. Tint Atlanta has installed exempted tint for cancer patients, lupus patients, and people on long-term immunosuppressants. It's a serious accommodation, not a workaround — but it's real, and it's available." — Steve Krontz, owner, Tint Atlanta

What happens if you get tinted illegally?

Illegal window tint in Georgia is classified as a misdemeanor. Statutory maximum: up to $1,000 fine plus court costs. In practice, first-offense citations in Cherokee, Cobb, Fulton, and surrounding metro counties typically settle at $100–$200 plus a requirement to remove or correct the film to a legal VLT.

Repeat offenses, tint on a windshield below the 6-inch strip, or tint that meaningfully obstructs an officer's view of the driver during a stop can escalate to a higher fine and, in some jurisdictions, a court appearance. The ticket does not directly affect insurance rates in Georgia but does become part of the driver's record.

Tint Atlanta's correction policy: if a Tint Atlanta install is cited for VLT non-compliance, Tint Atlanta removes the film and re-installs to the legal VLT at no charge. This has not been needed on a Tint Atlanta install in more than 12 years because every job is metered to the GA minimum before the customer leaves.

Does Georgia require a tint sticker?

Yes. Georgia requires a manufacturer's label or compliance sticker that identifies the installer (or film manufacturer) and the installed VLT. The sticker is placed on the driver-side door jamb or the lower corner of a tinted window. The sticker exists so an officer at a stop can verify compliance without needing to bring out a tint meter for every car.

Tint Atlanta applies the Madico-branded compliance sticker on every installed window on every job. The sticker includes the installer ID, install date, and the installed VLT for fast verification.

Is factory privacy glass the same as tint?

Factory privacy glass is the glass itself, not an applied film. On many SUVs and trucks, the manufacturer ships the back-side and rear windows with privacy glass that is naturally darker than the front. Georgia's VLT minimum applies to the combined light transmission of glass plus any film.

Because SUVs and trucks have no VLT minimum on the back-side and rear windows, adding film over factory privacy glass on those positions is legal regardless of the combined VLT. On a sedan, however, the combined VLT after adding film must still hit 32% — which usually means installing a lighter shade over factory glass to stay legal.

How does Georgia tint law compare to neighboring states?

Tennessee35% VLTAny darkness
South Carolina27% VLT27% VLT
Alabama32% VLTAny darkness
North Carolina35% VLTAny darkness

Travelers and snowbirds frequently ask whether tint legal in their home state remains legal when registered in Georgia. The answer is no — Georgia VLT minimums apply to every vehicle registered or operated in Georgia, regardless of where the tint was originally installed.

What VLT should I install if I want to be safe?

Tint Atlanta's standard install on Georgia sedans is 35% VLT on every window — slightly above the legal minimum to account for natural variance in factory glass and aging films. On SUVs and trucks, the standard is 35% VLT on the front side windows with the back-side and rear at the customer's preference (typically 20% or 5% for limo).

Installing right at 32% gives no buffer. A film that measures 32% on day one can drift to 28% over years of UV exposure on cheaper film. Madico films, which Tint Atlanta installs exclusively, are spec'd to hold their VLT for the life of the warranty.

Frequently asked Georgia tint law questions

What is the darkest legal window tint in Georgia?

32% VLT on the front side windows of every vehicle. On a sedan, 32% applies to every window including the rear. On an SUV or truck, the back-side and rear windows can be any darkness, including 5% limo.

Is 5% tint legal on the back of my Tahoe in Georgia?

Yes. A Chevy Tahoe is classified as an SUV under Georgia law, so the back-side windows and rear window can be any darkness. The front side windows still need 32% VLT minimum.

Can I install 20% tint on the front of my sedan with a medical exemption?

Yes, with an approved Georgia Medical Exemption Affidavit on file with the Department of Public Safety. Tint Atlanta installs darker-than-32% front side windows on sedans only when the exemption paperwork is present.

What's the difference between VLT and reflectivity?

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) measures how much light passes through the film. Reflectivity measures how much light bounces back off the film. Georgia regulates both: VLT minimums vary by vehicle and window position; the 20% reflectivity cap applies everywhere.

Does Georgia tint law apply to commercial vehicles?

Yes. Georgia VLT minimums apply to passenger vehicles regardless of personal or commercial use. Commercial vehicles such as box trucks and limousines are treated by vehicle class (most are SUV/truck classified). Out-of-state commercial vehicles operating in Georgia are subject to Georgia VLT minimums for the duration of their operation in the state.

Will I fail Georgia emissions if my tint is too dark?

No. Georgia emissions inspections do not test window tint VLT. Tint enforcement happens at traffic stops, not at emissions stations.

How is window tint VLT measured during a stop?

Georgia officers carry handheld tint meters that read the combined VLT of glass plus film. The meter is placed on either side of the window, transmits a known light source through the glass, and reads the percentage that passes through.
